Don’t Leave You Skin Out in the Cold this Winter

If live in a colder climate, winter can mean itchy, dry, irritated skin. As the temperatures are dropping, we’re spending more times in doors in heated, drier air. And when we’re outdoors, we’re often exposing our skin to harsh elements.

Just as we follow sun-safety recommendations to protect our skin during the summer months, we need to also be vigilant with our skin during the winter. This means continuing to use plenty of sunscreen on any areas not covered by clothing and also taking steps to prevent and care for cold-weather skin damage.

Here are a few winter skincare tips to help keep your skin healthy as temperatures drop:

  • Avoid harsh cleansers. Try a gentle non-alcohol-based cleanser during the winter to avoid excess dryness.
  • Wash your face less frequently. If you generally wash your face morning and night, consider replacing your morning cleanse by just splashing water on your face (skip the cleanser) and moisturizing immediately after. Cleanse your face as usual at night to remove makeup, sunscreen, and dirt.
  • Keep showers and baths short and not too hot. As delightful as it may feel at the time, long exposure to water and hotter temperatures further dry your skin.
  • Moisturize. Moisturize in the mornings and evenings, after each wash, and any time your skin feels dry. Consider using a heavier moisturizer in the winter than you use the rest of the year.
  • Don’t forget the sunscreen. It’s cold out, but the sun is still up there, even on the coldest and dreariest days, and can still damage your skin. Wear sunscreen daily, year round.
  • Stay hydrated. You might not feel as thirsty in cold weather as you do in hot, but you need to hydrate during the winter as much as during the sweltering summer.
  • Use a humidifier. Add some moisture to the air in your home or office with a humidifier.
