  • Injecting salt solution: The physician in charge of the procedure will inject a solution directly to the vein via a super fine needle. This solution is generally a salt solution. The blood vessel lining is irritated and it swells. The blood inside it clots. With the passage of time, this blood vessel gets transformed into a scar tissue. It fades and never returns.
  • Slight discomfort: Patients may experience a slight discomfort during the procedure even if the doctors use a super fine needle so that the irritation is minimized. This discomfort persists for a maximum of two minutes post injection. Irritation is greater for bigger veins. The procedure will take a maximum of 30 minutes. It is dependent on the quantity of veins injected. There is also the factor of the location of the veins and their size.
  • Ask relevant questions: In preparation for sclerotherapy, you should talk to your physician concerning all medicines being taken by you. There is a possibility that all of them may not be compatible with the treatment. Physicians recommend that patients should avoid taking ibuprofen and aspirin. Other anti-inflammatory drugs also should not be taken for a time period of 48 to 72 hours prior to sclerotherapy. The procedure, however, is not affected by Tylenol. Lotion must not be applied to the legs prior to the procedure.
