How To Get Rid Of Stretch Marks

While the experience of being pregnant and giving birth is miraculous, it takes a toll on a woman’s body, leaving behind stretch marks. Stretch marks form in the middle layer of the skin, called the dermis, and occur when the skin stretches beyond its natural elasticity. While stretch marks cannot be fully prevented during pregnancy (or other periods of weight gain), their appearance can be reduced with a few easy steps.

Tips For Reducing The Appearance of Stretch Marks

  • Stay hydrated: Keeping the skin and body hydrated are the easiest ways to minimize the damage caused by stretch marks. The skin is more likely to stretch instead of tear when it is moisturized daily with a natural lotion, such as cocoa butter. By drinking plenty of water, the body, too, stays hydrated, and helps the skin to rejuvenate at a quicker pace.
  • Start early: While preventing stretch marks is impossible, if treated early, stretch marks can be faded to near invisibility. When stretch marks are new and still red, begin using a retinoid cream, which needs to be prescribed by a doctor. The retinoid cream stimulates collagen growth, helps skin heal, and reduces the risk of scarring.
  • Home treatments: There are many home remedies that can be used to help reduce the look of stretch marks. These include using castor oil, Aloe Vera, or olive oil to keep the skin hydrated and moisturized. In addition, lemon juice helps reduce scarring, while potato juice promotes healthy skin cell growth.
  • Medical treatments: When stretch marks get bad, sometimes medical treatments may be necessary to reduce their visibility. Dermatologists have multiple procedures that can be completed to help with the appearance of stretch marks. These include in-office laser treatments, heat treatments, and microdermabrasion.
